As one of the handful of MPB vocalists who are true global stars of Brazilian music, Gal Costa has enjoyed a phenomenal career spanning over 30 years defining the nation’s sound. Her most recent albums have featured new interpretations of classic songs. Now, celebrating her 60th birthday, Gal Costa has released ´Hoje´ (Today), produced by Cesar Camargo Mariano, a showcase for new composers like Moisés Santana, Péri, Junio Barreto, Tito Bahiense, Moreno Veloso & Quito Ribeiro, Nuno Ramos & Clima and the trio Hilton Raw, Lenora de Barros and Marcos Augusto.

The repertory was selected with the help of Carlos Rennó and pianist Otávio de Moraes from a list of over 200 songs.

“They’re by composers who’ve been around for a while; some have recorded their own independent albums. It’s an honour for me to have the chance to show the work of these guys who’ve a hard time getting their music heard by the public,” says Gal. Along with work by local Brazilian composers, she’s also recorded three songs by Congolese artist Lokua Kanza, co-written with lyricist Carlos Rennó. Caetano Veloso also supplied a song – Luto – exclusively for the album. Another exclusive was “Embebedado”, written by Chico Buarque and Zé Miguel Wisnik.

Gal previously worked with Cesar Camargo Mariano on her 1983 album “Baby Gal”. “We had a stronger sense of shared identity this time”, she says. “Cesar also helped me in picking the songs, but I only sang those that really said something to me and that I could identify with.”

Both had met up again at a tribute show to Tom Jobim at Carnegie Hall in 2003. Cesar suggested to her the idea of recording an album of Chet Baker (which is in the works).

Cesar began pre-production a year before, working on arrangements and recording demos. “What made this recording so exciting from the outset was that we used a script but with a lot of improvising in the studio”, says Cesar, remembering that he hadn’t made such a spontaneous album since the times he worked with Elis Regina.

Daily, before Gal would arrive in the studio, Cesar would spend about 3 hours with the musicians working on the arrangements. “I chose these musicians in accordance with the sound I hear in my head. They’re young and talented, new blood with fresh ideas.”

Marcus Teixeira (acoustic guitar), Robinho (electric bass), Edu Martins (acoustic bass), Daniel de Paula (drums), Márcio Forte (percussion).

“Excluding myself and Gal, the musicians are all in the twenty something age group. But it felt like we had known each other for years. And that’s something you don’t find so much in a studio – it greatly helped Gal feel at ease during the recording.”

Local Trama singer Silvera participated in the recordings by chance. He was in the studio when Cesar invited him to try out some backing vocal harmonies inspired by the music of Lokua Kanza. On the “Sexo e Luz” track it’s Lokau himself who provides the backing.

“This meeting of minds came at the right time,” says Gal. “I´m very happy to celebrate my 60th birthday with this album, my first for Trama.”
