Release Classic episodes of TV program Ensaio, broadcast in Brazil by state TV Cultura over 34 years ago, have their first record on DVD: Elis Regina, originally exhibited in 1973. TV Cultura, recording company Trama and postproduction house TeleImage have joined forces to restore the files of one of the most important Brazilian television program: Ensaio. The restored material has been transferred to DVDs, letting Brazilian popular music admirers have classic recordings at hand – the ones made with Dorival Caymmi, Paulinho da Viola and Baden Powell among others*. The series’ premiere has happened with Elis Regina in a black and white recording which took place in 1973. “This is the first in a ten-DVD series which will be released due to a collaboration between Trama and TeleImage. It is about a rich heritage from TV Cultura’s archives in the last 35 years – the result of producer Fernando Faro’s ‘rehearsals’ (the meaning for the word ‘ensaio’). Indeed, with over 80 thousand hours of broadcasting content, we could not let slip the opportunity of exploring and made that musical treasure available,” Rádio e TV Cultura marketing director Cícero Feltrin points out. “Our aim is putting our technology and technicians’ expertise at the service of the country’s artistic heritage. So, we seek collaborations in projects such as the one involving Ensaio, a pioneering television product. To me, recovering our past and making it available to the biggest number of people possible is a personal satisfaction above all,” TeleImage president Patrick Siaretta asserts. To Trama, taking part in this project is an honor. “TV program Ensaio is a part of Brazilian music history and, thanks to this collaboration, it is available with high technical quality to the world. We are happy to revive such precious recordings as these,” Trama president André Szajman declares. On air since the seventies on TV Cultura, Ensaio accomplishes the Brazilian popular music memoirs by narratives of songwriters and musicians responsible for the best in the country’s production. Both the program and MPB Especial series were created by Fernando Faro in 1969 on television station TV Tupi. Nowadays Ensaio is broadcast by TV Cultura on Sundays at 11:00 pm. Every episode has a musical and interview mix, made in an intimate way – Faro’s watermark. The guest artist sings, talks about his work, chats about his everyday life and recalls personal stories. Today, the program’s archives are a unique musical and historical patrimony, including precious information about the greatest musicians in the country. The most different Brazilian music genres and trends worth mentioning are recorded in those musical conversations, which tour about samba, bossa nova, Tropicália, Jovem Guarda and folk music. TeleImage technology TeleImage’s restoration unit is dedicated to fix and preserve audiovisual material damaged by time or other destructive agents. Casablanca Restore System is a film digital restoration proprietary system that represents an accomplished tool. “We have very powerful servers that perfectly perform a job other systems could not. The integration between state-of-the-art technology and creative solutions is our difference,” TeleImage image supervisor Marcelo Siqueira says. All damaged material, originally recorded on film, can be scanned in high definition – 2K or 4K. The system also allows the restoration of other formats such as two-inch quadruplex tapes which were used in early television recordings. Each frame is treated separately and after restoration the material can be sent back to its original medium format or to other, as in the case of Ensaio, which was transferred to DVD. Among other projects of which TeleImage has been taking part are cinematographers Joaquim Pedro de Andrade’s and the Civelli brothers’ heritage restorations. The archive images used by Anibal Massaini Neto in the documentary Pelé Eterno were also restored by the company’s system. Trama technology Trama has two of the best audio restoration systems in the world: American Sonic Solution’s No-Noise and British Cedar’s Audio Restoration/Noise Reduction Suite. Done in two steps, the 24-bit digital restoration aims at removing anomalies caused by degradation (general noise, timbre differences and eventual damage caused over time) and letting the program’s audio most loyal to the original and adequate for the DVD format. * By agreement, TV Cultura has licensed the content and right to restore it to Trama and TeleImage. Nonetheless, releases are conditioned to individual deals concerning rights (author, artistic, image and sound recording ones). |
