Wilson Simoninha’s third album is a very fortunate union of two different plans. The first is compiling the previous two albums’ most striking songs to show them to the European audience, who swung to Simoninha’s groove during The New Samba Revue tour in 2002. This idea is joined by the initiative of re-recording the tracks with his excellent band live at Trama Studios, in São Paulo, instead of just getting them together. Over and above new songs are included. So, Introducing Wilson Simoninha Live at Trama Studios resulted in a unique experience – the portrait of an artist who transcends a phase in his career. What was already good in the albums Volume 2 and Sambaland Club now has a full-bodied version due to the energy of a live performance. Looking at his musicians in the eyes – that is how Simoninha has found the right formula to loyally record the electricity in his shows.
The repertoire is ravishing. “É Isso que Dá”, “Lá Vem o Homem” and “Bebete Vãobora” form an explosive opening trine that injects high doses of joy. From then on the record alternates ambiences that go from the romantic “Mais um Lamento” to the uptempo “Aquele Gol” and moments which are born classicalready, such as “Caminhos Cruzados” (thrilling Tom Jobim and Newton Mendonça’s song) and the seductive “Happy Hour à Beira-Mar” with a very nice piano played by a more than special guest: Cesar Camargo Mariano.
Cesar also plays in the vigorous “Tributo a Martin Luther King” version. A perfect example that a political song can still be creative and exciting, this Simonal’s success is the direct bridge between Simoninha’s work and his father’s. In Introducing Wilson Simoninha Live at Trama Studios it is clear that the singer not only inherited his blessed voice and undeniable charisma onstage but also the sympathy for experimentation is in his blood. In its conception, the record very much recalls the sixties and seventies jazz works beacause of the will of turning every song into something new and alive again with every re-recording.
Although flawless on paper, the whole project could have failed if the musicians hadn’t met with the expectation. Fortunately, Simoninha had been brought up among night legends – his father’s friends and colleagues who had filled his boy’s mind with wonderful stories from the Beco das Garrafas and so many other nightlife stages. That is why he had the right feeling when recruiting his supporting band. They are all aces – people who play as if it were as simple as breathing. Carlos Alberto D’Alcântara, Daniel de Paula, Fábio Luiz, Jericó, João Baptista, Junior Galante, Marcelo Maita, Márcio Forte, Marim Meira, Robinho, Tadeu Dias, Ubaldo Versolatto – a combustible dream team.
Above all, Introducing Wilson Simoninha Live at Trama Studios is a celebration to the act of making music. The audience leaves on this creative journey and feels all the power of a man who lives and breathes music to the utmost degree.
